My parents gave me my first ukulele in 1962. It was a Harmony. They didn’t get me lessons, and trying to learn from the meager book offerings of that time, was a colossal flop. My “tiny guitar” sat in boxes, in storage, and when there was room, on shelves as a decorative display. All this time, I was an avid, if lousy, guitar player, never willing to admit defeat by that 6 or 12-string monster. Then, in 2007, I went to a Jake Shimabukaro concert in Bremerton, Washington. I was hooked!! Now, I’ve sold all of my guitars (except for a 4-string tenor guitar), and have acquired 6 ukes, including my old Harmony. I’m still not a “good” player, but I attend the Seattle Ukulele Players Association (SUPA) meeting on the second Sunday, every month and have a ball, imperfectly playing with a group of 30 very nice and happy people. And it’s all because of Jake. That young man had a profound effect on me, and if I’m ever fortunate enough to meet him, I’ll make sure to tell him so. And I’m sure I’m not alone. Aloha nui loa, y’all. ;D
